Sierra Leone’s international reputation could take a hit if rising drug-related threats are not addressed decisively, the European Union’s Ambassador to Sierra Leone, Jacek Jankowski, has warned.

Speaking during a media engagement in Freetown, Jankowski raised concerns over allegations linking the country to aiding fugitive Jos Leijdekkers, reports of Sierra Leone being used as a transit hub for narcotics, and the importation of chemicals used in drug production from Europe.

“This is not just a domestic issue. It carries international dimensions that require coordinated action,” he said. The ambassador welcomed recent diplomatic exchanges, including a meeting in Geneva between the justice ministers of Sierra Leone and the Netherlands, calling it a step toward stronger cooperation.

Jankowski acknowledged that Sierra Leone faces challenges in monitoring its extensive coastline, harbours, and land borders. He urged broader collaboration to equip local institutions with the capacity to detect and prevent illicit trafficking in both directions.

Framing the issue as part of a global fight against drug trafficking, he noted that both Europe and Sierra Leone are grappling with the social impact of substance abuse, including the spread of the synthetic drug Kush.

“What we need is close cooperation to address this issue and work toward reducing its prevalence,” Jankowski said. “Total eradication may be difficult, but a realistic and sustained effort is essential.”

He pointed to the EU’s recently adopted Drug Strategy as the bloc’s framework for tackling trafficking and drug-related crime, reiterating the EU’s opposition to the export of narcotics to Europe and the flow of precursor chemicals into Sierra Leone.

The ambassador also called on international media to balance reporting on drug-related challenges with coverage of Sierra Leone’s progress, especially as the country marks its 50th independence anniversary.

“During milestones like the golden jubilee, I would like to see European media highlight Sierra Leone’s achievements alongside its challenges,” he said.
