Sierra Leone has cemented its place as the European Union’s third-largest source of organic cocoa, a milestone EU officials say highlights the country’s growing role in European agricultural trade.
In an exclusive interview with AYV, EU Ambassador to Sierra Leone, Jacek Jankowski, said organic cocoa has become a key export linking Sierra Leone to European markets and a central pillar of EU-Sierra Leone economic cooperation.
“Sierra Leone plays a significant role in meeting EU demand for organic cocoa. The commodity is now an important pillar of our trade relationship,” Ambassador Jankowski stated.
Despite the export gains, the Ambassador noted that Sierra Leone’s economy remains small with limited purchasing power. He urged stronger European private-sector involvement to drive expansion, create jobs, and support sustainable development.
“We need to see more EU partnerships investing in the country. Increased private-sector engagement and investment opportunities will be critical for long-term growth,” he said.
Ambassador Jankowski also disclosed that discussions between Freetown and Brussels are advancing on port security. Strengthening port protection and control mechanisms, he said, is part of broader efforts to improve trade safety, ease commerce, and deepen economic ties.
The remarks underline continued EU interest in Sierra Leone’s development. As the country pushes to diversify its economy and attract foreign investment, its rising profile in the organic cocoa market is expected to boost its standing in international trade.
