Two men were remanded to custody on Thursday after appearing before Magistrate Mustapha Brima Jah at the Freetown Magistrate Court on charges linked to a break-in and theft at the Guoji Company office in Cline Town.
The accused, identified as 22-year-old plumber Abu Sankoh and 45-year-old marketer Alie Alhassan Kabia, are facing two counts: conspiracy to commit a felony and breaking and entering with larceny, contrary to Section 26(1) of the Larceny Act of 1916.
Prosecutors allege that on Friday, July 3, 2026, the pair forced their way into the company’s premises at the former National Workshop in the Western Area and made off with US$43,000 and Le1,092,000 in cash belonging to Guoji Company.
Representing the State, Deputy Superintendent of Police Eric A. Deen told the court that all relevant case files and documents had been served on the accused and their lawyers.
Lead defence counsel, I. Conteh Esq., subsequently applied for bail. He argued that credible sureties were ready to enter into recognisance to secure the defendants’ attendance and pledged that they would not interfere with witnesses. The application was made under Section 76(1)(c) of the Criminal Procedure Act of 2024.
After reviewing the submissions, Magistrate Jah declined bail, citing the gravity of the charges. No plea was taken as the matter proceeds as a committal hearing — the preliminary stage where the court determines if there is sufficient evidence to refer the case to the High Court for trial.
Both men were ordered to remain at the Male Correctional Centre pending the next court date.
The case was adjourned to July 30, 2026, for further proceedings.
