The Ministry of Gender and Children’s Affairs (MoGCA) has convened a crucial meeting of the National Committee for Gender-Based Violence (NaCGBV) to reaffirm the Government of Sierra Leone’s commitment to a coordinated response to Gender-Based Violence (GBV). The gathering, which included representatives from key ministries, civil society organizations, and development partners, focused on strengthening collaborative efforts in GBV prevention and response.

In his opening remarks, Deputy Director Harry Mahoi expressed gratitude to stakeholders for their strong participation and timely commitment. He emphasized the need for sustained collaboration and unified action to effectively combat GBV and uphold the rights of women, girls, and children throughout the country.

Director of Planning and Policy Ibrahim Kamara presented the strategic objectives of the NaCGBV, describing it as a multi-sectoral coordination platform that aims to streamline interventions, reduce duplication of efforts, and enhance the Ministry’s mandate in promoting gender equality, women’s empowerment, and child protection. Kamara stressed the necessity for partner institutions to formalize their collaboration through a Service Level Agreement, ensuring that activities align with the Ministry’s strategic goals in the fight against GBV.

Consultant Ramatu Kargbo provided insights into the definitions, root causes, and long-term consequences of Gender-Based Violence. She highlighted the importance of a holistic and coordinated national response, noting that the establishment of the NaCGBV is intended to support government initiatives addressing GBV challenges.

The session included discussions on validating the Committee’s Terms of Reference, with participants offering input aimed at strengthening its governance structure and operational effectiveness. The meeting concluded with a collective commitment by members to finalize and validate the Terms of Reference, ensuring an inclusive and responsive coordination framework. Stakeholders reaffirmed their determination to intensify efforts to eliminate Gender-Based Violence and foster a safer, more equitable Sierra Leone.
