It is with deep sorrow, we mourn the passing of Professor Joseph Aruna Lawrence Kamara, who left us on the 10th of December, 2025. His loss is not only a great blow to his family, but to the entire academic community of Sierra Leone and all who had the privilege to learn under his guidance.
A distinguished scholar, mentor, and servant of our nation. His life was one of dedication to education, integrity, and the pursuit of excellence. Through his teaching, leadership, and service, he shaped countless lives and contributed immensely to the intellectual and moral development of Sierra Leone.
Though he has departed this earthly life, his legacy lives on in the many students he mentored, the institutions he strengthened, and the values he stood for. We thank God for the gift of his life and service.
Professor Kamara served as our Head of the Mathematics and Statistics Department, and later rose to become Vice Chancellor and Principal within just a few years—an achievement that spoke volumes about his brilliance, dedication, and unwavering commitment to academic excellence.
Prof. Kamara had about twenty-six years of teaching and research experience at FBC with a PhD in Technical Demography (Mathematical Demography and Statistics) from the Centre for population Studies, London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. University of London; an MSc (Joint) degree in Mathematical Statistics and Demography from the University of Stockholm in Sweden; and a BSc in Mathematics from FBC.
A renowned mathematician with deep expertise in Statistics and Demography, Professor Kamara devoted his life to advancing knowledge and nurturing young minds. His contributions to the field and to the University of Sierra Leone will remain a legacy that future generations will continue to celebrate.
We mourn a great scholar, a leader, and a mentor. His impact lives on in the countless students, professionals, and scholars he helped shape.

-Memorial Service at Thomas Aquinas Catholic church Kortright, FBC 9:00am-11:00am.
-Depart Freetown for Potoru via Christ the king college, Bo 11:30am
-Depart CKC for Potoru: 3:30pm
-Vigil service at R.C
Church potoru: 7:00pm; wake keeping at Kamalah Compound. - Saturday 24th January 2026:
-Funeral Mass and Interment at Potoru 10:00am
