The Government of Sierra Leone, through the Ministry of Health and Sanitation, has received a donation of 75,000 mpox vaccines from the Democratic Republic of Congo. This significant gesture of solidarity marks a crucial step in the fight against the mpox virus in the country.
The donation aims to bolster Sierra Leone’s response to the virus by protecting high-risk groups and reducing transmission rates. The vaccines were officially received at Lungi International Airport by the Honourable Minister of Health, accompanied by representatives from the National Public Health Agency (NPHA), UNICEF, the World Health Organization (WHO), and the Africa CDC.
Since the first confirmed case in January 2025, Sierra Leone has experienced a rapid increase in confirmed cases, now surpassing 4,000. As vaccination efforts commence, the public is urged to remain vigilant, practice hand hygiene, and adhere to all public health guidelines to effectively combat the spread of the virus.
