Government has reaffirmed its commitment to improving the education sector, but Finance Minister Sheku Bangura Karefa Kargbo says teachers should not expect all their demands to be met at once.
Speaking amid mounting pressure from teachers nationwide over pay, working conditions and resources, the Minister said the government recognizes the challenges and will prioritize the most critical issues facing schools.
“While the government is committed to improving the welfare of teachers, it cannot fully meet all of their demands at this time,” Kargbo stated. “However, we will prioritize and address the most critical issues facing the education sector.”
The Minister acknowledged the concerns raised by teachers across the country, including calls for better pay, improved conditions, and timely provision of school subsidies and learning materials.
But he stressed that current fiscal realities will limit the pace of change.
“While the government has acknowledged these concerns, Kargbo stressed that fiscal constraints require a phased approach to reforms,” he said.
Teachers’ unions have in recent weeks intensified calls for government action, citing delays in subsidy payments and gaps in classroom resources.
Government officials say the phased approach will focus first on clearing outstanding subsidies and addressing urgent gaps, while longer-term welfare issues will be tackled as resources become available.
The Ministry of Finance says it remains in dialogue with education stakeholders to ensure stability in schools while managing the country’s budget pressures.
