Senior health officials and technical partners have held urgent discussions to strengthen Sierra Leone’s defenses against Ebola, as outbreaks of the Bundibugyo strain continue in the Democratic Republic of Congo and Uganda.

The National Public Health Agency (NPHA) and the Ministry of Health brought together government leaders, surveillance specialists, epidemiologists, and health partners on May 25, 2026, to review the country’s preparedness and identify critical gaps.

The meeting focused on assessing Sierra Leone’s capacity to detect, contain, and respond to any imported cases or potential local transmission. Officials said the goal was to ensure the national health system remains on high alert and ready for rapid action.

Dr. James Squire delivered a detailed briefing on the current state of preparedness, outlining existing measures, weaknesses, and priority steps to bolster the country’s response framework.

Participants also examined ongoing surveillance systems and discussed strategies to improve coordination across agencies involved in disease detection and containment.

Authorities described the engagement as part of ongoing efforts to safeguard public health and prevent the virus from reaching Sierra Leone.
