Judgment Looms for Jaffals and Antars After Violent Clash at Young Sports Club

Six individuals are awaiting judgment after being found guilty in a case involving assault and disorderly behavior at the Young Sports Club (YSC) in Freetown. One accused has been discharged.

The seven defendants—Ali Jaffal, Abdul Jaffal, Abdallah Jaffal, Mohamed Jaffal, Abass Antar, Naif Antar, and Hassan Jaffal—appeared before Magistrate Santigie Bangura at Pademba Road Court No. 2, facing charges of wounding, assault, affray, throwing missiles, and disorderly behavior.

The charges stem from an incident on April 6, 2024, at the YSC facility on Wilkinson Road, during which the accused allegedly wounded Adam Hamdam and Mohamed Aroune. The charge sheet indicates that the defendants engaged in a fight, causing public fear by throwing stones, sticks, and other objects.

During the initial appearance, the charges were read and explained, but no plea was entered. After the prosecution presented its case and the defense submitted a no-case submission, Magistrate Bangura withdrew the file for judgment. In his ruling, he found the first, second, third, fourth, fifth, and seventh defendants guilty, while the sixth was discharged.

State prosecutor Yusuf Isaac Sesay expressed confusion over the joint no-case submission, noting that the accused were represented by separate lawyers. He emphasized the confessional statements made by the accused and the testimonies of Prosecution witnesses 1, 2, and 3, which he argued provided sufficient evidence to support the charges.

The defendants were represented by Tuma A. Jabbie, the President of the Bar Association. The matter has been adjourned to March 12, 2025, when Magistrate Bangura will deliver the final judgment.
