Former President Dr. Ernest Bai Koroma has expressed gratitude following the discontinuation of criminal proceedings against him, describing the development as a step toward national peace and reconciliation.
In a statement issued Tuesday, Dr. Koroma thanked God, President Julius Maada Bio, the Government of Sierra Leone, and regional leaders for their roles in resolving the matter.
The Attorney-General and Minister of Justice entered a Notice of Discontinuance under Section 45 of the Criminal Procedure Act, 2024, formally ending the case. With the discontinuance, Dr. Koroma’s bail conditions have been lifted and he is now free to return to Sierra Leone at any time.
“I am grateful to God for sustaining me and my family through a difficult period,” Dr. Koroma said. “My faith remains in the principles of peace, justice, and reconciliation. I also acknowledge President Bio and the Government of Sierra Leone for actions guided by the Constitution and the rule of law.”
The former President extended appreciation to the Authority of ECOWAS Heads of State and Government, ECOWAS Commission President Dr. Omar Alieu Touray, and former African leaders for their interventions in support of dialogue and regional stability.
He specifically recognized Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the Government and people of Nigeria, and National Security Adviser Mallam Nuhu Ribadu for the hospitality and support accorded to him during his stay in Abuja.
Dr. Koroma said Sierra Leone has overcome major challenges in the past by prioritizing unity and collective action, and reaffirmed his commitment to initiatives that promote democracy, peace, and the welfare of citizens.
Lead Counsel Confirms Discharge
In a separate statement, Lead Counsel Joseph Fitzgerald Kamara, Esq., confirmed that his client had been “formally and fully discharged of all criminal charges.”
He noted that Dr. Koroma had respected the judicial process, complied with all bail conditions, and cooperated with authorities throughout.
“We welcome the Attorney-General’s lawful exercise of authority in the interest of national peace, reconciliation, and social cohesion,” Kamara said. “Our client looks forward to returning home to continue contributing to dialogue, development, and to being with his family. We trust this matter is now closed and that no further legal or extra-legal actions will be pursued.”
The discontinuance brings to an end a high-profile case that drew significant domestic and international attention, and has reignited discussions on national unity and post-conflict reconciliation.
