FREETOWN, Wednesday, September 17, 2026 – The National Civil Registration Authority (NCRA) has issued free National ID Cards to 100 inmates at the Sierra Leone Correctional Centre in Freetown in commemoration of International Identity Day. The ceremony, held in partnership with the Sierra Leone Correctional Service, marks the first time inmates in the country have been biometrically captured and issued National Identification Numbers (NIN) while still in custody. International Identity Day is observed globally on September 16. Speaking at the event, Director General of the Correctional Service, Joseph J. Senesie, said the exercise goes beyond mere administration.
