Koidu Town, Kono District — The Maternal Center of Excellence (MCOE), a state-of-the-art 120-bed hospital, is nearing completion in Koidu town. Co-funded by the Government of Sierra Leone and Partners In Health, this facility aims to significantly improve access to healthcare for mothers and infants in the region.
Once operational, the MCOE will not only serve Sierra Leone but is also expected to attract interest from across West Africa, providing a platform for medical training, modern technology, and clinical research. The Ministry of Health has been actively involved in the project, ensuring alignment with national healthcare improvement efforts.
On Thursday, a national steering committee comprising representatives from the Ministry and Partners In Health convened to assess the project’s progress and outline plans for the official commissioning of the center. Construction is currently in its final phase, with the handover and operational activities expected to commence in the coming months.
In addition to the hospital, a new warehouse has been established on-site to store medical equipment, medicines, and other essential supplies, ensuring the long-term sustainability of the facility’s operations.
The MCOE is poised to provide in-patient services and serve as a training hub for healthcare professionals, fostering knowledge exchange between local and international experts. Its comprehensive services are set to benefit both urban and rural communities, reinforcing the commitment to enhanced maternal and child healthcare in the country.
The official opening of the Maternal Center of Excellence is anticipated within the next few months.
