The Ministry of Gender and Children’s Affairs has pledged to strengthen rehabilitation and reintegration programs for women and girls in Sierra Leone’s correctional centres, placing vocational training and restorative justice at the center of its reform agenda.

Speaking at a stakeholder engagement in Freetown, Minister Dr. Isata Mahoi said government is committed to ensuring women in conflict with the law are treated with dignity and given “access to life-changing skills” that can rebuild confidence and foster economic independence.

“These women deserve opportunity,” Dr. Mahoi told the gathering. “Fashion and creative arts are practical tools that help them return to society with renewed purpose.”

The initiative, convened by philanthropist Isha Johansen, is part of a wider collaboration between government and private stakeholders to promote social inclusion within the justice system. It comes as the Ministry rolls out reforms aimed at bolstering institutional support for incarcerated women.

According to the Minister, ongoing efforts include expanding vocational and skills training inside correctional facilities, improving welfare conditions, and strengthening protection for vulnerable inmates.

Dr. Mahoi stressed that the measures are central to government’s commitment to “leaving no individual behind, regardless of their circumstances.” She added that empowerment and rehabilitation programs lay the foundation for long-term social transformation as Sierra Leone advances its gender empowerment agenda.

Stakeholders at the forum expressed optimism that sustained interventions will improve rehabilitation and reintegration outcomes for women and girls in conflict with the law.
