The Inspector General of Police William Fayia Sellu has told new police recruits that discipline and professionalism are non-negotiable as they prepare for national service.
Speaking Thursday at the Advanced Public Order Training School in Samu, Kambia District, Sellu said policing is a full-time career demanding commitment and sacrifice, not a part-time job. He reminded the trainees that the rigorous programme they are undertaking is designed to turn them into disciplined, professional officers capable of meeting international standards.
The IGP noted that only a small number were selected from more than 15,000 applicants, urging the recruits to treat the opportunity seriously. He said adherence to the camp’s code of conduct is mandatory, with strict penalties for breaches. Once training ends, the recruits will also be instructed on the updated 47 Rules governing police conduct.
Sellu announced a zero-tolerance stance on drug abuse and illegal substances within the force. Anyone found culpable, he warned, will face the full force of the law. He added that unannounced drug tests would be carried out at the training camp.
He called on instructors to maintain high standards, describing Samu as a key facility for producing competent officers. During his visit, the IGP toured the academy’s facilities and said plans are underway to upgrade resources and improve infrastructure to boost training and operational readiness.
The recruits were also reminded that policing carries significant responsibility, given officers’ mandate to handle firearms and protect lives and property.
