The Chief Minister Dr. David Moinina Sengeh has praised the Global Mercy hospital ship for its substantial contribution to Sierra Leone’s health sector, calling the three-year mission a model of effective partnership and leadership.
Following a tour of the vessel with his family and staff, Dr. Sengeh said the ship’s work went beyond statistics to deliver tangible improvements in patient care and professional training across the country. He described interactions with medical staff and patients as moments of “joy, gratitude, and hope.”
Since arriving in August 2023, the Global Mercy has hosted more than 1,700 international volunteers who performed over 5,000 surgeries for Sierra Leoneans. The mission also trained nearly 700 local health workers, including doctors, nurses, and technicians, through programs run in partnership with the government.
The ship’s presence created direct economic benefits as well. About 450 Sierra Leoneans were employed as day workers, gaining income and practical experience. Health officials noted that collaboration with the ship’s team contributed to an estimated 80% drop in post-operative infections, reflecting gains in clinical practice and infection control.
Dr. Sengeh credited President Julius Maada Bio for facilitating the partnership and said continued engagement with the Global Mercy board helped sustain the operation. He also thanked the initiative’s leadership, including Sandra Lako, for their commitment to expanding access to specialized care.
The vessel is scheduled to depart in the coming weeks, marking the longest continuous deployment of the Global Mercy in any country. Its collaboration with the Ministry of Health will continue after departure, focusing on ongoing training and medical support.
Government waivers granted to the mission helped streamline operations, the Chief Minister noted, adding that the ship’s legacy will be felt in both healthcare outcomes and broader economic activity.
