The Sierra Leone Embassy in Moscow hosted a community-focused Eid celebration at its chancery on Korovy Val, bringing together members of the Sierra Leonean community with particular attention on students currently studying in the Russian Federation.
Welcoming guests, Ambassador Mohamed Yongawo said the embassy welcomed 28 newly arrived students for the 2026 academic year. He urged the students to remain committed to their studies and stressed that acquiring proficiency in the Russian language would be essential to both academic performance and future career prospects. The Ambassador also advised against waiting until the end of the term to seek help, cautioning students to avoid last-minute dependence on support structures such as the Students’ Union.
Reinforcing the message, Minister Plenipotentiary Ibrahim Saspo Sankoh called on students to communicate early with the Students’ Union leadership so that the embassy could intervene promptly—particularly on issues relating to visas and academic matters.
Student affairs were represented by *Mr. Emmanuel Kalie Kamara, President of the Sierra Leone Students Union (NUSS-RF), who commended the Ambassador’s accessibility and continued support. He highlighted ongoing difficulties affecting students, including delayed allowances and late arrivals, noting that such challenges largely fall within the responsibilities of the host country. Mr. Kamara also shared encouraging updates, stating that *26 students, many in medical fields, are expected to graduate during the current academic year.
Mr. Kamara further disclosed plans for a week-long Sierra Leone Independence Day celebration in Moscow, organised by students, with support and direction from the embassy.
Additional remarks were delivered by *Ms. Kadija Karim, who called for unity and kindness among students, and *Ibrahim Dugba, who raised concerns about the high cost of publishing in reputable academic journals.
The event ended on a festive note, as attendees enjoyed food, conversation, and shared fellowship—marking Eid while also strengthening bonds among Sierra Leoneans in Russia.
