Sierra Leone is looking to Ghana’s Tema Port experience to guide the construction of its $55 million industrial fishing port, as a high-level delegation from the Ministry of Fisheries and Marine Resources concluded a technical familiarisation tour of the port facilities on Friday, September 11, 2026.
The delegation, led by Fisheries and Marine Resources Minister Madam Princess Dugba, first paid a courtesy call on Ghana’s Minister of Transport, Hon. Joseph Bukari Nikpe, before proceeding to the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA).
Welcoming the Sierra Leonean team, Minister Nikpe said the visit was important for peer learning and sharing best practices between African nations.
“Such visits create opportunities for both countries to learn from each other and copy good policies and practices. Only Africans can support each other in solving problems affecting Africans,” he said, pledging his Ministry’s full support to ensure a successful outcome.
In her remarks, Minister Dugba thanked her Ghanaian counterpart for the warm reception and explained that the visit was aimed at studying the development and management of Ghana’s ports to draw lessons for Sierra Leone’s own projects.
She disclosed that Sierra Leone is set to construct a $55 million industrial fishing port within the next two years, funded by a grant from the Chinese Government.
According to her, Ghana’s long experience in port operations makes it an ideal case study for identifying areas of technical cooperation and knowledge exchange.
The proposed fishing port will comprise a jetty, marine house, waste management facility and a modern fish market.
Once completed, the project is expected to help Sierra Leone tap into the blue economy, create jobs for youths and women, and drastically reduce post-harvest losses in the fisheries sector.
Members of the delegation included Deputy Minister of Fisheries Ahmed Saybom Kanu, the Director and Professional Head of the Ministry Sheku Sei, and Sierra Leone’s High Commissioner to Ghana, H.E. Mohamed Hassan Kaisamba.
Following the courtesy visit, the team held a brief meeting with Ghana’s Minister of Trade, Agribusiness and Industry, Elizabeth Ofosu-Agare, and the Director-General of the GPHA, Major General Paul Seidu Tanye-Kulono.
The delegation was later taken on a conducted tour of Tema Port focusing on port upgrading, cargo handling and sustainable fisheries logistics.
