Sierra Leone Taps Swiss Tech Giant Bühler to Drive Agro-Processing Push

By Joseph Momoh, D.S

The Government of Sierra Leone is finalizing a strategic partnership with Bühler AG, the Swiss industrial technology firm, to fast-track agro-industrialisation and shift the country from raw commodity exports to high-value food processing.

The collaboration was advanced during a high-level food systems forum held at Brookfields Hotel in Freetown. The event, convened by the Presidential Initiative for Climate Change, Renewable Energy and Food Security (PI-CREF) with the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security, drew government officials, private investors, and development partners.

Agriculture and Food Security Minister Henry Musa Kpaka said the government’s priority has moved from policy design to execution, with value addition at the core of the Feed Salone programme. “Our focus is on scaling value addition,” Kpaka said. “We must reduce dependence on exporting raw produce and build a strong domestic processing base.”

Bühler AG, a global leader in food processing technology, is set to play a key role in Sierra Leone’s Food Park Initiative. Talks centered on concrete measures to deepen local processing capacity, including upgrading the rice value chain, expanding animal feed production, and developing systems for nutritious foods.

The engagement is scheduled to close with business matchmaking sessions and a formal signing, intended to convert dialogue into investment and operational projects that strengthen the country’s agro-industrial sector.
