Pujehun, April 20, 2026 The Government of Sierra Leone will commission the Bandajuma-Pujehun road this weekend, ending more than two decades of delays on a key southern corridor.
Chief Minister David Moinina Sengeh said the 25.24-kilometre project became an immediate priority after his swearing-in, following a direct instruction from President Julius Maada Bio. “When President Bio speaks, we must act,” Sengeh said, recalling that the President identified the unfinished road as an urgent task during their first meeting after he took office.
The completed road includes several bridges, notably the new Makibie Bridge, and 55 culverts built to improve drainage and durability. Sengeh, a native of Pujehun District, said he assured the President the road would be delivered. “I promised President Bio that together, we would deliver this road. Today, we have fulfilled that promise,” he said.
The Bandajuma-Pujehun project has a long history of unmet pledges. It was promised by previous administrations, including that of former President Ahmad Tejan Kabbah and twice by former President Ernest Bai Koroma, but was never completed.
Officials expect the commissioning to boost connectivity, spur local economic activity, and expand access to essential services in Pujehun and surrounding areas. The project is being presented as evidence of the government’s focus on delivering critical infrastructure and addressing longstanding development gaps.
