WHO Delivers 16 Motorbikes to Strengthen Sierra Leone’s Disease Surveillance Network

FREETOWN Sierra Leone’s capacity to detect and contain disease outbreaks has received a boost, with the Ministry of Health and the National Public Health Agency, NPHA, taking delivery of 16 Honda motorbikes from the World Health Organization, WHO.

Funded through the Pandemic Fund, the donation is designed to close mobility gaps for frontline health workers and surveillance teams operating in remote communities where access remains a challenge.

Health ministry officials said the motorbikes will be deployed to improve three critical areas: timely transport of medical samples, faster deployment during outbreak response, and expanded reach for routine surveillance activities.

“Mobility is central to early detection,” a ministry official noted. “When teams can move quickly between communities and labs, we shorten the window between detection and containment.”

Authorities added that the intervention aligns with ongoing national efforts to build a more resilient health system and strengthen emergency preparedness ahead of future public health threats. NPHA officials emphasized that strong community-level surveillance remains the first line of defense against disease spread.

The Ministry of Health thanked WHO and the Pandemic Fund for their continued partnership, describing the motorcycles as a practical investment in nationwide disease monitoring and emergency response.
