Sierra Leone’s Parliamentary Female Caucus has ramped up its campaign to embed gender inclusion and women’s rights protections in the country’s constitutional review, calling the process a key moment to lock in gains for equality and representation.

The push came during a two-day forum held Thursday, May 7, at Committee Room One in Parliament, co-funded by the Parliament of Sierra Leone and PetroJetty. The meeting drew female MPs, senior government officials, civil society actors, and development partners to scrutinize gender provisions in the draft Constitution of Sierra Leone Amendment Act 2025.

Themed “Examining Gender Provisions in the Proposed Constitution of Sierra Leone Amendment Act 2025,” the session examined how reforms can expand women’s participation, strengthen equality, and secure legal protections for women and girls within the democratic framework.

Opening the engagement, Clerk of Parliament Karmoh K. Conteh traced the history of the Female Caucus and past institutional drives under the African Capacity Building Foundation project to amplify women’s voices in the legislature. He pointed to progress in representation, including meeting the 30 percent benchmark for women in governance, and urged female lawmakers to stay unified and strategic.

“This constitutional review process presents an important opportunity for women leaders and stakeholders to strengthen legal protections and ensure greater inclusion of women in governance and national decision-making,” Conteh said.

Participants debated specific clauses affecting women and girls and explored mechanisms to boost equality and political participation nationwide. The talks form part of broader national consultations on the 2025 Amendment Act, which aims to reform governance structures and reinforce democratic institutions.

The Female Caucus reiterated its pledge to champion gender-responsive reforms and keep women’s voices at the center of Sierra Leone’s democratic future.
