The Executive Secretary of the Independent Commission for Peace and National Cohesion, Madam Hawa Sally Samai, has called on Sierra Leoneans, particularly political leaders, to take collective responsibility for safeguarding national peace and unity.

Madam Samai made the call on Wednesday during a Symposium on Governance Experience Exchange at the Chinese Embassy on Spur Loop, Freetown. The event marked the 105th anniversary of the Communist Party of China and the 55th anniversary of China-Sierra Leone diplomatic relations.

She noted that while every country’s development path is different, there is value in adapting successful practices to fit Sierra Leone’s own context.

Sharing lessons from her recent visit to China, the ICPNC boss highlighted three key principles: social cohesion, collective responsibility, and a shared national vision.

“One of the key lessons from China is the commitment of its people and institutions to work together toward common national goals,” she said. “As a small country, Sierra Leone can still make a meaningful contribution to regional and global development. By learning from international best practices and working together around a shared national agenda, we can build a stronger, more peaceful, and more cohesive nation.”

She encouraged citizens to embrace collaboration, broaden perspectives through international exchange, and prioritize solutions that strengthen peace, unity, and national development.

The symposium brought together representatives from the Sierra Leone People’s Party, All People’s Congress, Political Parties Regulation Commission, Ministry of Local Government and Community Affairs, Ministry of Tourism and Cultural Affairs, and other institutions. Participants who had undertaken study visits to China also shared firsthand lessons on Chinese governance and development.

Organizers said the event reaffirmed that dialogue, partnership, and knowledge exchange are critical to advancing good governance and sustaining peace in Sierra Leone.
