FREETOWN – The Kennedy Street Market Traders Association has praised the Executive Director of the Sierra Leone Road Safety Authority, James Bagie Bio, for what it described as his outstanding efforts to improve road safety and compliance nationwide.

On Wednesday, 19th August 2026, members of the Association staged a joyful visit to the SLRSA compound on Kissy Road. Accompanied by a brass band, portraits and a banner bearing the Executive Director’s image, the traders danced and jubilated to show appreciation for Bio’s leadership.

Speaking on behalf of the group, Public Relations Officer Alhassan Kamara said the Association has been monitoring SLRSA’s work and has observed major improvements in road safety across the country.

Kamara noted a clear reduction in road traffic accidents and better movement and clearance of roads. He added that the visit was also to recognize Mr. Bio’s representation of Sierra Leone at the United Nations General Assembly in July.

Receiving the delegation, Mr. Bio said he was “short of words” to express his gratitude for the gesture and apologized for not meeting the traders earlier. He acknowledged the critical role traders play in road safety, noting they are among the most exposed road users due to their daily buying and selling along roadsides.

The Executive Director said the country has recorded fewer road crashes this rainy season compared to previous years. He attributed the progress to increased public sensitization, stakeholder engagement and enforcement of road safety laws.

Bio also announced that SLRSA will soon establish a Highway Management Unit at Gberray Junction to improve safety along the North and Northwest corridors. The unit, he said, will target the removal of stationary trucks that pose a risk to motorists and pedestrians.

“I am happy that you recognized my work. This has given me more confidence and motivated me to do more,” Bio told the traders.

He urged drivers to refrain from alcohol and drug use before driving and stressed that road safety is a collective responsibility. The Authority, he said, will continue working with traders, drivers, pedestrians, transport unions and other stakeholders to protect lives on Sierra Leone’s roads.

The Executive Director reaffirmed SLRSA’s commitment to bringing all stakeholders on board in the national road safety campaign.
