Minister Denies 200 Political Prisoners Claim

By Joseph Momoh, Reporter D.S

Sierra Leone’s Minister of Information and Civic Education, Chernor Bah, has dismissed ongoing claims that over 200 political prisoners remain in the country. These assertions have persisted despite the provisions outlined in Resolution 4(b) of the Agreement of National Unity, signed between the government and the All People’s Congress (APC) party.

Minister Bah addressed the allegations, stating that both the ruling Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP) and the APC conducted thorough checks and found no evidence of the alleged political prisoners. “None of them even spent time in prison or were arrested, and no records of them exist,” he explained.

The Minister reassured the public that those previously detained have already been released. “Nobody was killed in prison, and none were hidden away in prison,” he emphasized, urging the community to understand the facts surrounding the issue.

Bah also commented on the growing discourse regarding the number of political prisoners, labeling it as misleading. “The conversation has been going around that we hold many political prisoners,” he noted. “However, after thorough checks, it was confirmed that only 13 individuals met the criteria, including members from the APC, SLPP, and Civil Society.”
