Sierra Leone’s Ministry of Employment, Labour and Social Security (MELSS) has confirmed the issuance of summary dismissal letters affecting over 1,000 employees of Koidu Limited. In a press release dated May 6, 2025, the Ministry assured all stakeholders that the government is committed to protecting the labor rights of its citizens in accordance with national laws and international standards.
The dismissals, which have led to a strike by approximately 900 workers at Koidu Holdings Limited, have raised concerns about the fairness of the layoffs. Striking employees describe the terminations as abrupt and unjust, asserting that they occurred without prior notice or consultation with the workforce.
The strike has effectively halted operations at the mining site, with workers demanding reinstatement and an urgent meeting with company management to discuss the circumstances surrounding their dismissals. Local labor unions and community leaders have expressed solidarity with the striking workers, highlighting the potential impact of these layoffs on families and the broader community.
As the situation evolves, affected employees and their supporters are calling for a swift resolution from management to address their grievances.
