A privately funded public transport project is nearing launch after 25 new buses were cleared at the Queen Elizabeth II Quay, a development expected to ease transportation challenges for commuters across Sierra Leone.
The $3 million fleet was financed by businessman and philanthropist Mohamed Omodu Kamara, widely known as Jagaban.
Project officials said the process began in July 2025 with the procurement of buses in China. Kamara personally inspected and purchased 16 custom-built 60-seater Yutong buses intended for urban routes. Nine additional Golden Dragon buses were acquired for rural communities due to their suitability for rough terrain.
Shipping arrangements were completed in September 2025 through Ronghao Motor. The buses arrived in Freetown in July 2026 and received customs clearance on July 29.
Kamara described the initiative as a “game-changer” for economic growth, noting that reliable transportation is critical for citizens to access healthcare, education, and employment opportunities.
In addition to expanding transport services, the project is expected to create jobs for drivers, conductors, technicians, and administrative staff. A new bus depot is currently being finalized and will also serve as a training center for personnel.
Organizers further announced that passengers will enjoy free transportation for the first two months of operation as part of efforts to reduce commuting costs.
With clearance now complete, focus has shifted to finalizing the depot and recruiting staff ahead of the public rollout. The fleet is expected to significantly increase the availability of public transportation, with the greatest impact anticipated in Freetown.
