Freetown, Sierra Leone — The Government of Sierra Leone has successfully secured a budget support package of €13.5 million from the European Union (EU) through its EU Nature Nourishes Programme. This funding, approximately equivalent to Le 351 million, aims to bolster the nation’s development priorities across several critical sectors.
The approval stems from the Sierra Leonean government’s effective implementation of key reform measures, particularly in public policy strengthening, macroeconomic stability, public financial management, and domestic resource mobilization.
According to the Ministry of Information and Civic Education, this financial support will be instrumental in enhancing the quality of education, expanding home-grown school feeding programs, increasing rice production, and improving overall food security. Additionally, the funding will facilitate the decentralization of public services and support initiatives aimed at combating deforestation and boosting climate resilience.
The government acknowledged the significant contributions of various Ministries, Departments, and Agencies in executing the reforms and commended the Ministry of Finance for its role in coordinating the process and meeting the EU’s commitments within the designated timeframe.
Moreover, the funds are expected to enhance data and monitoring systems within the education sector while also strengthening efforts toward environmental protection, specifically in the Western Area Peninsula National Park.
The European Union remains a pivotal development partner for Sierra Leone, with both parties reaffirming their dedication to sustainable development and long-term collaboration.
