Bio Commissions ‘Eye of West Africa’ ECOWAS HQ in Abuja

By Saidu Jalloh, D.S

President Julius Maada Bio on Thursday officially opened the new ECOWAS Headquarters here, describing the complex as the “Eye of West Africa” and a landmark for regional integration.

Speaking as Chairman of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government, President Bio said the inauguration was not just about a building, but about renewing commitment to a united and prosperous region.

“Today, we do not simply inaugurate a new headquarters. We reaffirm our collective belief in regional integration, African solidarity, and the enduring vision of a peaceful, prosperous and united West Africa,” he said.

He thanked Nigeria for hosting and supporting ECOWAS since its founding in 1975, and expressed appreciation to President Xi Jinping and the Government of China for donating the facility. He said the gift reflected a growing strategic partnership between China and West Africa.

President Bio said the significance of the complex will be judged by the actions it produces. “This building represents far more than steel, glass and concrete. It stands as a powerful symbol of our shared ambition, our collective resilience, and our unwavering commitment to a stronger West Africa,” he stated.

He urged ECOWAS to focus on delivering for citizens, citing expectations for freer trade, job creation, stronger security, and expanded opportunities for women and youth.

Acknowledging current pressures on the bloc, including insecurity, unconstitutional government changes, illicit trade and economic volatility, the President reaffirmed ECOWAS’ stance on constitutional governance.

“The people of West Africa are not waiting for promises. They are waiting for results,” he said. “The future of West Africa will be determined not by the challenges we face, but by the courage, vision and determination with which we confront them.”

President Bio also highlighted ECOWAS Vision 2050, calling for greater investment in education, technology, entrepreneurship and innovation, and said the region’s youthful population is its biggest advantage.

He charged the ECOWAS Commission to uphold high standards of public service and to place citizens at the centre of policy decisions.

Proceedings included the unveiling of a commemorative plaque, ribbon-cutting, the planting of a Unity Tree by President Bio and Nigerian officials, a tour of the complex, and a reception for guests.

He closed by expressing hope that the new headquarters would endure “as a lasting symbol of African unity, regional solidarity and our shared determination to build a brighter future.”
