The Maternal healthcare in York Village, Western Rural District, received a major lift on 28 May as the Orange Sierra Leone Foundation partnered with UBA Foundation and Mama-Pikin Foundation to commission a fully refurbished labour ward and post-natal clinic.
The upgrade transforms a facility previously hampered by infrastructure gaps. It now has modern delivery beds, post-natal beds, an oxygen machine, and other critical equipment designed to improve care for mothers and newborns.
The project followed a needs assessment by Orange Foundation in October 2025 that flagged urgent deficiencies. In February 2026, Orange formalized a partnership with UBA Foundation to fund and deliver the intervention.
“This project was born from listening to the community,” said Annie Wonnie Katta, Director of Orange Sierra Leone Foundation. “Our goal is to ensure women in York have access to safe, dignified maternal care.”
UBA Sierra Leone CEO Mohamed Alhajie Samoura noted the bank commits 1% of annual profits to community development, with health as a priority. He called the York clinic “a meaningful investment in the women of this community.”
District Medical Officer Dr. Prince Masuba, who delivered the keynote, described the refurbishment as timely. He said it will strengthen maternal and child health services across the district.
Mama-Pikin Foundation, active in maternal health since 2008, will continue supporting service delivery at the facility.
Orange Sierra Leone CEO Aicha Touré reaffirmed the company’s broader CSR focus: “We remain committed to improving lives through impactful community investments, particularly in healthcare.”
Community health authorities welcomed the upgrade and pledged to maintain the facility for sustained impact.
