FREETOWN – The Government of Sierra Leone has dismissed reports circulating on social media that Sierra Leoneans are banned from travelling or transiting through Guinea’s airport.
In a public notice issued on Thursday, August 20, 2026, the Ministry of Information and Civic Education said there is no ban on Sierra Leoneans with valid travel documents. Citizens who meet immigration and security requirements can continue to travel for legitimate purposes.
However, the Ministry clarified that restrictions do apply to those attempting to use Guinea as a transit route for migration or overseas employment outside official procedures.
According to the notice, Guinean authorities raised concerns over increasing cases of irregular migration, suspected human trafficking, and unverified overseas employment schemes linked to Sierra Leoneans using the transit route.
The Government urged citizens seeking overseas jobs to follow lawful recruitment, labour and immigration processes. It stressed that all employment arrangements must be verified through the Ministry of Employment, Labour and Social Security before departure.
“Citizens should not use Guinea or other transit routes to bypass these procedures. Following the proper process helps protect travellers from trafficking, exploitation, fraudulent job offers and unnecessary travel difficulties,” the Ministry stated.
Sierra Leoneans who encounter difficulties while travelling through Guinea have been advised to contact the Sierra Leone Embassy in Conakry on +224 621 048 214 for consular assistance.
The Government reaffirmed its commitment to work with Guinean authorities and international partners to ensure legitimate travel and protect the welfare of Sierra Leonean citizens.
