The United Nations (UN) has appointed Jeneba J. Bangura, the Commissioner General of Sierra Leone’s National Revenue Authority (NRA), to its prestigious Committee of Experts on International Cooperation in Tax Matters. This announcement was made by UN Secretary-General António Guterres in a press release dated July 30, 2025.

Bangura’s appointment is significant, making her the second Sierra Leonean and the first Sierra Leonean woman to join this esteemed committee in over two decades. She ranked second among 25 distinguished tax experts selected from around the globe.

The UN Tax Committee is essential in fostering international tax cooperation centered on fairness, inclusivity, and development. Under-Secretary-General Li Junhua highlighted the Committee’s vital role in helping countries align their tax policies with developmental objectives. The Committee serves as a platform for experts to tackle contemporary challenges, including reforming tax treaties for the digital age, ensuring fair taxation in sectors such as extractives, and exploring wealth taxation mechanisms. By promoting collaboration among experts from various backgrounds, the Committee aims to devise innovative solutions suitable for different tax systems.

In response to her appointment, Bangura expressed her gratitude, acknowledging the visionary leadership of President Julius Maada Bio in championing women’s representation in leadership roles and enhancing Sierra Leone’s global standing. She extended her appreciation to President Bio, Minister of Finance Sheku Fantamadi Bangura, Minister of Foreign Affairs Musa Timothy Kabba, and Sierra Leone’s diplomats at the UN Permanent Mission, particularly Ambassador Imran Kanu and his supporting staff.

A seasoned public sector leader, Jeneba Bangura is recognized for her expertise in financial management, tax administration, and strategic governance. She has been instrumental in advancing Sierra Leone’s public financial systems.

Bangura’s selection is expected to not only elevate Sierra Leone’s profile in international tax discussions but also inspire future generations of women leaders in the country. Her commitment to fostering equitable tax systems aligns with global efforts to combat tax evasion and enhance revenue collection, particularly in developing nations.
