FREETOWN – The National Medical Supplies Agency has pledged to strengthen internal oversight after a volunteer was indicted by the Anti-Corruption Commission for allegedly stealing a $38,000 ultrasound machine meant for public health facilities in Bo District.

Francis Lavai, who worked as a volunteer at the NMSA warehouse, faces one count of Misappropriation of Public Property contrary to Section 36(1) of the Anti-Corruption Act 2008, as amended in 2019.

According to the ACC, between December 2025 and January 2026, Lavai allegedly misappropriated a portable black-and-white convex ultrasound machine from the Bo District Medical Stores. The equipment was part of a donated consignment under the Sexual and Reproductive Health Programme earmarked for public health units in Bo.

In a press statement issued on August 19, 2026, NMSA said it remains “fully committed to transparency, accountability, and integrity.” The Agency said it will respect due process and allow the courts to determine the case.

“The Agency reiterates its full cooperation with the Anti-Corruption Commission and will continue to provide all necessary information, documentation, and assistance required to support the investigation,” the statement read.

NMSA also committed to tightening its monitoring and tracking systems to prevent future loss or diversion of medical equipment.

Managing Director Madam Jatu Josephine Abdulai had earlier announced a zero-tolerance policy on corruption and theft, warning that any staff found culpable would face the full weight of the law.

The National Medical Supplies Agency is the government body responsible for the procurement, warehousing and distribution of drugs and medical supplies to public health institutions across Sierra Leone.
