Poem Title: Sierra Leone’s Plight

By: Elizabeth A Kaine

In Freetown’s streets, a sorrowful sight
Fuel crisis bites, with prices soaring high tonight
The vulnerable weep, as costs take flight
Leaving many poor, with no end in sight

Mamas cry, as food prices rise
Children’s dreams, lost in fuel’s demise
Fishermen idle, with no fuel to spare
Leaving families, with no food to share

The US far away, but impact’s real
Affecting lives, with a painful deal
Sierra Leoneans wait, with anxious hearts
For fuel to flow, and a brand new start

Merchants profit, as the poor suffer pain
Using fuel and dollars, to justify the gain
Prices soar high, as the people cry
Sierra Leoneans struggle, as the crisis lingers by

Parents pray for schools, to close their doors
A heartbreaking plea, as transport costs roar
Once they begged for education’s light
Now they pray for closure, through the endless night

In this hard time, hearts are sore
A cry for justice, echoes evermore
When will relief, come to stay?
For Sierra Leone, a brighter day
