President Julius Maada Bio has unveiled a robust strategy aimed at intensifying Sierra Leone’s fight against the illicit drug known as Kush, announcing five key directives focused on prevention, enforcement, and justice.

In a national address, President Bio emphasized his government’s commitment to addressing the growing threats posed by Kush abuse and trafficking, which negatively impact public health, security, and social stability.

Central to the new strategy is the establishment of a Specialized Fund designed to support five main pillars of the national anti-Kush initiative: Prevention, Care and Treatment, Social Support, Law Enforcement, and Community Engagement. This fund aims to secure sustainable financing for both ongoing and future efforts to combat drug abuse.

To ensure the swift and fair prosecution of drug offenders, President Bio announced the creation of a Special Court that will focus exclusively on drug-related cases. This court will feature specially appointed judges and magistrates responsible for expediting trials and reinforcing the rule of law against traffickers and dealers.

Additionally, the President revealed plans to form a Dedicated Security Unit comprising personnel from the Sierra Leone Police’s Operational Support Division (OSD) and the Republic of Sierra Leone Armed Forces (RSLAF). This unit will conduct targeted raids on known drug hotspots and execute coordinated arrests to dismantle trafficking networks.

In a further move to strengthen the judicial framework, President Bio directed the Honourable Chief Justice to develop a new Practice Direction for handling drug-related cases. This directive is intended to promote consistency and severity in sentencing, thereby enhancing deterrence and accountability within the justice system.

Lastly, the President instructed the Attorney-General and Minister of Justice to expedite a comprehensive review of existing drug laws, aiming to impose tougher penalties, enhance enforcement mechanisms, and introduce asset seizure provisions to target the financial gains from drug trafficking.

These combined efforts mark a decisive shift toward a more coordinated and results-driven approach to addressing Sierra Leone’s drug crisis. The new measures are expected to complement ongoing community sensitization and rehabilitation programs while reinforcing the government’s commitment to eradicating the Kush epidemic.
