Freetown, Sierra Leone — During the State Opening of the Third Session of the Sixth Parliament of the Second Republic, President Julius Maada Bio emphasized the urgent need for Sierra Leone to diminish its reliance on imported food and goods. He asserted that true national progress hinges on the country’s ability to achieve self-sufficiency in food production.
In his address, President Bio highlighted that genuine independence can only be attained when Sierra Leone can satisfy its basic needs from domestic resources. He called on both the government and the citizenry to prioritize local agricultural initiatives as part of the government’s Medium-Term National Development Plan for 2024–2030. This plan aims to enhance essential services, fortify public institutions, and foster an inclusive economy by promoting local farming.
The President underlined the importance of unity and collaboration among Sierra Leoneans, urging citizens to rise above political and regional divides. He stressed that development is a collective responsibility, with every individual—from farmers and educators to entrepreneurs and community leaders—playing a crucial role in shaping the nation’s future.
President Bio’s remarks included a commitment to support farmers through improved resources and infrastructure, enabling them to grow, store, and sell food locally. This strategic focus on agriculture is intended to lessen the country’s dependence on foreign imports and bolster national resilience.
As the new legislative session commences, the President’s vision for a self-sufficient Sierra Leone sets a clear agenda for Parliament and government institutions in the months to come. His call to action serves as a powerful reminder that the path to lasting development lies in cultivating homegrown solutions and empowering local communities.
