Lawmakers from both the ruling Sierra Leone People’s Party and the opposition All People’s Congress have voiced joint opposition to a provision in the Constitutional Amendment Bill that would allow independent candidates to contest the presidency.
During debate on the Bill this week, several MPs argued against opening the presidential race to individuals not affiliated with registered political parties.
Hon. Marray Conteh and Hon. Daniel Koroma were among those who spoke against the clause, warning that it could alter the country’s party-based electoral structure.
The cross-party pushback has intensified discussions in Parliament as legislators continue reviewing proposed changes to the country’s electoral and governance framework.
The debate forms part of broader national conversations on electoral reform, with Parliament weighing the potential implications of each amendment before a final vote.
The Constitutional Amendment Bill remains under consideration. MPs are expected to continue deliberations on all clauses before deciding whether to adopt the changes.
