The Sierra Leone Road Safety Authority and Nigeria’s Federal Road Safety Corps have signed a five-year Memorandum of Understanding to strengthen road safety management and curb rising road crashes.
The agreement was reached following a study visit by SLRSA officials to Nigeria, where they examined FRSC’s operational systems, enforcement strategies, and use of technology in traffic management.
The MoU provides a framework for collaboration in training, research, data management, public and driver education, vehicle administration, and technical support.
Speaking at the signing ceremony, SLRSA Executive Director James Bagie Bio described the pact as a major milestone.
“This MoU will not gather dust on the shelf,” Bio said. “It will be implemented through structured engagement, monitoring and evaluation to produce tangible results for road users.”
Deputy High Commissioner of Sierra Leone to Nigeria and Deputy Head of Mission to ECOWAS, Major General (Rtd.) Dauda Alpha, welcomed the agreement, noting that it reflects deepening regional cooperation and a joint commitment to safer transport systems across West Africa.
The partnership comes amid growing concerns over road crashes in Sierra Leone, with commercial motorbikes contributing significantly to accident rates. Officials say the deal will enable Sierra Leone to adopt best practices from Nigeria in enforcement, crash data management, and public awareness.
While specific programmes and funding arrangements are yet to be disclosed, both authorities reaffirmed their commitment to translating the agreement into practical interventions to protect motorists, passengers, and pedestrians.
