KAILAHUN, May 4, 2026 (SLENA) – World Bank Executive Directors toured Jojoima Government Hospital in Kailahun District this week, reviewing a facility built with Bank funding that has become a cross-border healthcare hub for Sierra Leone, Guinea, and Liberia.

Tasked with delivering essential care to local communities, the hospital has drawn patients from neighboring countries seeking treatment, underscoring its regional reach.

Upgrades to surgical units, neonatal care, and clinical infrastructure have driven a sharp decline in maternal mortality rates, officials said. Modern equipment and improved facilities have turned the hospital into a critical lifeline for mothers and newborns across the Mano River Union.

Located near the borders with Guinea and Liberia, Jojoima now functions as a strategic gateway for cross-border health services. The World Bank’s support forms part of a wider push to strengthen rural health infrastructure, with the hospital’s expanded capabilities credited for reducing pregnancy-related deaths.
