Freetown, Sierra Leone – The Sierra Leone Maritime Administration (SLMA), in partnership with the Joint Maritime Committee Steering Group (JMC-SG), has reassured the public about safety measures following the stranding of three fishing vessels at Aberdeen-Lumley Beach.
In a public notice issued in accordance with the Merchant Shipping Act of 2003, the SLMA identified the vessels as FV TANDEEN 001, FV TAIBA, and FV SKY 777, which recently became grounded along the popular coastal stretch. The administration has conducted a joint technical, environmental, safety, and security assessment to evaluate potential risks to public safety, tourism, and the local hospitality industry.
The SLMA has formally communicated with the registered owners and agents of the stranded vessels, demanding that salvage operations commence by September 23, 2025. The administration has urged all parties with financial interests in the vessels to come forward. Failure to respond by the deadline will result in the vessels being declared wrecks, at which point the Receiver of Wrecks will oversee their safe and environmentally responsible disposal in compliance with the Merchant Shipping Act.
Addressing concerns raised by beachgoers and nearby recreational facilities, the SLMA reassured the public that there is no immediate threat to safety. The administration remains committed to the removal of the stranded vessels while prioritizing public safety and environmental protection.
