Statistics Sierra Leone (Stats SL) is ramping up preparations for the 2026 National Population and Housing Census with the launch of a comprehensive mapping exercise set to begin on October 8, 2025. This initiative will deploy hundreds of trained field staff across the country to ensure accurate data collection when the census officially commences.
The mapping will encompass all administrative divisions, including regions, districts, chiefdoms, and wards, laying the groundwork for reliable census data. As part of the preparatory phase, Stats SL has already initiated a ten-day training program on Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and cartographic mapping aimed at equipping Master Trainers with essential skills for effective mapping.
At the training launch, Ms. Sibeso Mululuma, Officer-in-Charge of UNFPA S/L, underscored the significance of the census as a critical statistical undertaking. She noted that GIS and cartographic mapping are vital for producing accurate maps, which are essential for comprehensive coverage and enumeration during the census.
On October 5, 2025, Alusine Rehme Wilson, the Northern Regional Publicity Officer for the census, addressed a large audience of teachers, students, and stakeholders at the Wusum Stadium in Makeni during a friendly football match organized by the Sierra Leone Teachers’ Union (SLTU) in celebration of World Teachers’ Day.
Wilson announced that mapping teams will be deployed to Bombali, Tonkolili, Falaba, and Koinadugu Districts as part of the nationwide effort. He emphasized the engagement of schoolchildren in the mapping process, which is part of ongoing communication strategies to raise awareness about the census.
Highlighting the importance of community involvement, Wilson described the mapping exercise as a crucial foundation for achieving credible results in the upcoming census. He urged teachers and local leaders to actively participate in sensitization efforts throughout the country.
