A delegation from the Mayors’ Migration Council (MMC), alongside officials from the Freetown City Council (FCC), visited Congo Market yesterday to announce plans for a significant $200,000 (Le4,670,000) upgrade aimed at enhancing infrastructure, sanitation, and the livelihoods of traders.

Led by Mr. Samer Saliba, Director of City Practice at MMC, the three-member delegation outlined how the grant will be utilized for several key initiatives:

  • Biodigester Installation: Powered by bio-waste collected from the market.
  • Public Toilet Rehabilitation: Two toilets will be refurbished to provide liquid waste for the biodigester.
  • Cold Room Construction: This facility will allow traders to store perishable goods, reduce waste, and increase their incomes.

During the visit, city officials also revealed plans to install new shade covers with solar lighting at the market, beginning Saturday, October 25. These covers will replace those damaged by a storm in 2023.

“The MMC-funded interventions will enhance working conditions for rural-urban migrants while promoting sanitation and fostering a circular economy that directly benefits women and youth traders,” officials stated at the event.

As Freetown continues to accommodate a growing population of rural-urban migrants, the city remains committed to sustainable development initiatives that improve market infrastructure and support economic empowerment.
