The President Julius Maada Bio has sworn in Mr. Osman I. Kanu as the new Solicitor-General of the Republic of Sierra Leone in a ceremony held at State House.

The oath-taking formalized Kanu’s appointment to the country’s second-highest legal office, a role mandated under Section 65(2) of the 1991 Constitution. Secretary to the President, Baba Fortune, administered the constitutional requirements, confirming Kanu is now empowered to assume duties.

Addressing the ceremony, Kanu expressed appreciation to the President for the appointment, describing it as a weighty responsibility rather than an honor. He noted the significance of the date, coinciding with the Day of Arafah and the Day of Ashura, which he said reinforced his commitment to faith, accountability, and public service.

“Faith has guided me throughout my professional journey and will continue to guide me in serving the people of Sierra Leone. I regard this appointment not as a reward, but as a solemn call to service,” Kanu stated.

The newly sworn Solicitor-General pledged to uphold the rule of law, strengthen democratic institutions, and ensure justice remains accessible, particularly for vulnerable citizens. With 22 years of experience in the Law Officers’ Department, Kanu assured the President and the nation of his commitment to improving the efficiency of the Attorney General’s Office.

President Bio congratulated Kanu and urged him to remain firm in upholding justice and constitutional principles. The President expressed confidence in Kanu’s capacity to provide leadership and enhance the work of the legal department.

“I want to wish you well as you assume this important responsibility. Be assured of my full support. I am confident that with your wealth of experience, you will enhance the effectiveness of the office and contribute significantly to strengthening the institution,” President Bio said.

Kanu’s career spans roles as State Counsel, Senior State Counsel, Head of the Civil Division, and Director of Public Prosecutions, a position he held from his appointment by President Bio in 2023 until his elevation this month.

His appointment is expected to bolster ongoing reforms in the justice sector and reinforce government’s commitment to accountability and effective public service delivery.
