The Minister of Internal Affairs, AIG (Rtd.) Morie Lengor, has convened an emergency security meeting in Freetown following a deadly confrontation between police officers and commercial motorbike riders in Kailahun District on June 21, 2026.
The meeting brought together key security leaders, District Security Committee members, the Paramount Chief of Luawa Chiefdom, Regional Commander East, representatives of the Office of National Security, and leadership of bike riders’ unions to investigate the incident and restore public order.
Addressing participants, Minister Lengor confirmed that preliminary investigations are underway and several arrests have already been made. He commended local authorities and security forces for their swift response, which he said helped contain the violence that left one rider dead, sparked civil unrest, and led to attacks on police facilities.
The minister conveyed government condolences to the family of the deceased and sympathy to those injured, including officers affected by the unrest. He warned that the government will not tolerate further violence or destruction of public property, stressing that offenders would face the full force of the law.
Minister Lengor directed that a comprehensive investigation be conducted to establish the full circumstances of the clash. He announced that the Independent Police Complaints Board will undertake an independent inquiry and submit recommendations, adding that all officers found culpable will be held accountable under the law.
He also instructed police to verify the licensing and documentation of all impounded motorbikes before their release. Engaging DISEC members, the minister emphasized professionalism within the security sector and urged officers to adopt proactive and preventive policing strategies. He acknowledged operational challenges facing personnel and assured them of government support.
Resident Minister East, Gbessay J.K. Ngobeh, briefed the meeting on immediate measures taken on the ground, including deployment of reinforcements and use of local radio stations to appeal for calm. He said these interventions helped stabilize the district and enabled authorities to impose a curfew while investigations continue.
The Kailahun District Local Unit Commander reported that 28 individuals were arrested prior to the unrest and eight motorbikes were impounded. He confirmed that all suspects remain under active police investigation.
In closing, Minister Lengor called on commercial motorbike riders and their unions to pursue grievances through lawful and peaceful channels. He reiterated that the Sierra Leone Police must uphold professionalism and strict adherence to its code of conduct to protect citizens’ safety and rights.
Stakeholders at the meeting unanimously condemned the violence and pledged cooperation with a transparent probe.
On the sidelines, the Kailahun District Progressive Youth Association introduced itself to the minister and outlined plans for an official launch later this year focused on youth empowerment, civic education, and community safety initiatives. Minister Lengor commended the initiative and pledged government support.
