FREETOWN – The Inter-Religious Council of Sierra Leone has called on political leaders to break the current deadlock in Parliament and ensure constitutional amendments are done in the interest of all Sierra Leoneans.
In a statement, the IRCSL, representing Muslims, Christians and other faith groups, commended the Government and the APC for the Agreement for National Unity following the 2023 elections. The agreement led to the Tripartite Committee which produced 80 recommendations for governance and electoral reforms.
The Council said the ongoing constitutional amendment process is key to those reforms. It noted that it participated in earlier consultations and urged that views from citizens and religious bodies be given due consideration.
While praising MPs for their involvement, the IRCSL expressed grave concern over the stalemate on constitutional requirements for the proposed amendments.
“The Constitution is the supreme law of the land,” the Council stated. “It belongs to the people of Sierra Leone and must not be treated as the property of any political party.”
The IRCSL stressed that the Constitution affects both present and future generations and must be amended with responsibility, transparency and respect for due process.
The Council called on Parliament, the Judiciary, President Julius Maada Bio and all stakeholders to act in a God-fearing manner and in the national interest.
It urged Parliament to reconvene and reach a constructive consensus that respects constitutional procedures.
“Sierra Leone belongs to all of us,” the Council said, praying that God and Allah grant lawmakers wisdom, humility and love for the people they serve.
