The Director General of the National Social Security and Insurance Trust (NASSIT), Chernor Mamoud Jalloh, has conducted a high-level inspection of the 108.4-megawatt NANT Power Project at Kissy Dockyard in Freetown, to get first-hand updates on its progress, operations and compliance.
Mr. Jalloh led a delegation from the Trust on the tour, which was aimed at familiarising NASSIT management with the background of the project, its workforce, implementation status, and plans for future expansion beyond the capital.
Welcoming the delegation, Executive Director of NANT, Karim Nasser, thanked the NASSIT leadership for the visit and congratulated the Board Chairperson and the Director General on their new appointments. He said the visit offered a valuable opportunity to brief NASSIT on the significant strides being made on the project.
Giving an overview of the project, NANT’s Administration and Logistics Manager, Peter Kamuray, disclosed that the facility is a 108.4MW liquefied natural gas (LNG) and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) combined-cycle power plant under construction at the Kissy Dockyard.
He explained that upon completion, the plant will inject reliable baseload electricity into the national grid to serve Freetown and the entire Western Area, with far-reaching benefits for economic growth, national energy security and reduction in carbon emissions.
On local content and employment, Kamuray revealed that the project currently employs 740 workers, of which 597 are Sierra Leoneans, underscoring NANT’s commitment to local employment and skills transfer.
He further assured the NASSIT delegation that the company is fully compliant with its social security obligations and remains up-to-date in the payment of contributions for all its staff.
The engagement, according to NASSIT officials, highlights the Trust’s proactive approach to engaging employers, understanding their operations and enforcing compliance with social security laws as a way of protecting workers’ rights and securing their future benefits.
The NANT Power Project is regarded as one of the largest private energy investments in the country and is expected to significantly ease Freetown’s chronic electricity challenges when completed.
