Sierra Leone’s Chief Minister, Dr. David Moinina Sengeh, on Thursday held a crucial high-level meeting with the Commonwealth Secretary-General, Hon. Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey, at the Commonwealth headquarters, Marlborough House in London, as part of renewed efforts to strengthen Sierra Leone’s global partnerships and advance its national development priorities.
The meeting, described by officials as warm and highly productive, brought together two of the Commonwealth’s influential figures to discuss deepening cooperation and to map out concrete areas of collaboration ahead of a busy international calendar.
Central to the discussions was Sierra Leone’s longstanding relationship with the Commonwealth and the country’s strategic priorities ahead of the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) 2026, which will be hosted in Antigua and Barbuda. Dr. Sengeh used the opportunity to outline Sierra Leone’s vision for a more impactful Commonwealth that delivers practical benefits for its people.
A key focus was investment and economic growth. Dr. Sengeh briefed the Secretary-General on Sierra Leone’s ongoing reforms to improve the business climate and attract foreign direct investment, and both leaders explored how the Commonwealth’s network of 56 member countries can be leveraged to create new trade corridors, investment partnerships, and private sector linkages for Sierra Leone.
Climate finance also dominated the agenda. With Sierra Leone among the countries most vulnerable to climate change, Dr. Sengeh highlighted the urgent need to strengthen the country’s capacity to access and mobilise climate finance. In response, Hon. Botchwey and Dr. Sengeh discussed expanded technical support from the Commonwealth Secretariat to help Sierra Leone build robust systems to secure climate funding and implement climate-resilient development programmes.
The issue of peace and national cohesion was also given prominence. The two leaders reflected on the Commonwealth’s historic and continued role in supporting peace, democracy, and stability in Sierra Leone, particularly through good offices, electoral support, and institutional strengthening. They reaffirmed the importance of sustained engagement to consolidate peace and promote inclusive governance.
Dr. Sengeh underscored Sierra Leone’s deep commitment to Commonwealth values and principles, stating that under the leadership of President Julius Maada Bio, Sierra Leone values not just membership, but practical cooperation that translates into jobs, investment, climate action, and improved livelihoods for ordinary citizens.
The meeting is part of a broader official visit to the United Kingdom during which the Chief Minister is holding a series of engagements with senior UK government officials, international financial institutions, and development partners, all aimed at strengthening bilateral and multilateral partnerships and projecting Sierra Leone’s national interests on the world stage.
Dr. Sengeh was accompanied to the meeting by His Excellency Dr. Morie Komba Manyeh, Sierra Leone’s High Commissioner to the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.
