The Human Rights Commission of Sierra Leone has trained staff to strengthen preventive monitoring in detention facilities in line with national and international human rights standards.
The virtual workshop was held on Friday in collaboration with DIGNITY and the Network of African National Human Rights Institutions. Staff from HRCSL headquarters and regional offices took part.
According to organizers, the session built on an earlier in-person training and focused on practical skills for monitoring places of detention. The objective is to ensure conditions meet established legal, regional, and international benchmarks.
The programme forms part of a three-year initiative to strengthen legal and institutional frameworks across Africa and prevent torture and other forms of ill-treatment within justice systems.
HRCSL said the training will enhance its capacity to assess detention centres and uphold the rights and dignity of persons deprived of liberty.
The Commission reaffirmed its commitment to promoting human rights and ensuring detention standards are maintained nationwide.
