Freetown, March 25, 2026 The Tacugama Chimpanzee Sanctuary’s Community Outreach Department has concluded two days of Environmental Days for pupils enrolled in the Tacugama Kids Environmental Education (TKEEP) programme on 18th and 22nd March 2026.
The programme, aimed at strengthening school-based learning on environmental conservation, featured quizzes, drama performances, poetry recitals and spelling competitions, with prizes awarded to outstanding performers. One Environmental Day was hosted at the *Regent Community Centre, bringing together learners from **Rural Education Committee Primary School (Regent), Church of Christ Mountain Rural School, Saio Primary School and Logus Academy. The second competition involved *Education for All School (Allen Town), Amazing Grace School, Children in Crisis School and Abigail Butcher Primary School.
This year’s TKEEP Environmental Days centred on the chimpanzee as Sierra Leone’s *National Animal, celebrating its newly-designated status and promoting pride in the country’s national symbol. The event also included nature- and wildlife-themed games to reinforce lessons on conservation and the chimpanzee’s role in Sierra Leone. TKEEP is delivered as a *year-long supplemental programme, taught by pupils’ own teachers and supported by Tacugama education specialists, with practical learning activities for children.
Some pupils commended Tacugama Sanctuary for the initiative, urging that it be sustained. By bringing together schools from the Western Area surrounding Tacugama, the event provided a platform for learners to demonstrate not only their knowledge of environmental issues, but also creativity, confidence and public speaking skills.
At the end of the competitions, prizes—including certificates, pens and pencils, notebooks, backpacks, T-shirts, geometry sets and water bottles—were presented to participants. Organisers said the programme also reinforced key messages on conservation, sustainability, and protecting chimpanzees and their natural habitats, while encouraging collaboration and peer learning among the participating schools.
Preparations are now underway to host similar Environmental Day activities for schools in the Eastern region to extend the programme’s reach.
