Government Receives 942 Sierra Leoneans Returned from Guinea

The Government of Sierra Leone has confirmed the return of 942 Sierra Leoneans who were received at the Kambia border following ongoing operations by Guinean authorities targeting undocumented foreign residents.

In a press release dated *24 March 2026, the *Ministry of Information and Civic Education said the development followed a clearance exercise carried out in *Conakry, particularly around the *Boulbinet port area on 23 March.

The ministry said the operation was part of Guinea’s efforts to dismantle informal settlements and identify undocumented nationals, with Sierra Leoneans among those affected— including individuals without valid documentation. It added that Sierra Leoneans with proper documentation were released, while those without legal status were scheduled for return.

The Government of Sierra Leone noted that through its embassy in Conakry, it has engaged Guinean counterparts to ensure the process is conducted in an orderly and humane manner, with respect for the rights and dignity of those involved.

Officials from both countries are jointly managing the return at the border, with Sierra Leonean authorities handling the reception, screening and documentation of returnees, while also facilitating their safe reintegration into their communities.

As of *24 March 2026, the ministry stated that *942 Sierra Leoneans, including adults and children, have been received at Kambia, with arrangements for onward movement ongoing.

The Government assured the public that it will continue to monitor the situation closely and maintain diplomatic engagement with Guinean authorities to ensure due process and protection for Sierra Leoneans.
