Dr. Kandeh Kolleh Yumkella, Energy Sector Lead and Chair of the Presidential Initiative on Climate Change, Renewable Energy, and Food Security (PI-CREF), emphasized the need for collective ownership in Sierra Leone’s energy transformation.

Freetown – In a landmark address to Parliament on October 15, Hon. Dr. Kandeh Kolleh Yumkella, Energy Sector Lead and Chair of the Presidential Initiative on Climate Change, Renewable Energy, and Food Security (PI-CREF), emphasized the need for collective ownership in Sierra Leone’s energy transformation.

Invited by Speaker Hon. Sengepoh Thomas, Dr. Yumkella received a warm welcome before delivering his presentation, which extended beyond a typical technical briefing. He urged lawmakers to view energy projects as national initiatives, stating, “They belong to the people of Sierra Leone. Every party, every representative, must own it and ensure its sustainability beyond political transitions.”

His message resonated across party lines, as he acknowledged members from both the ruling Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP) and the opposition All People’s Congress (APC). Dr. Yumkella’s inclusive leadership style was evident as he called for unity and constructive collaboration in addressing the nation’s energy challenges.

In a notable display of humility, he credited his predecessor for their contributions to the progress made in the energy sector. This acknowledgment underscored the importance of continuity and respect in Sierra Leone’s developmental journey. Observers lauded this moment as a refreshing example of political maturity, which is often lacking in polarized national debates.

Dr. Yumkella highlighted the administration’s commitment to reliable and sustainable energy for all Sierra Leoneans, stating that the President would include opposition leaders in commissioning energy projects. This approach aims to reinforce the message that energy security is a shared goal, transcending political affiliations.

The session concluded with bipartisan applause, as lawmakers unanimously granted Dr. Yumkella the rare honor of addressing the House. This privilege reflects the deep respect for his integrity, expertise, and dedicated service to the nation.

As Sierra Leone advances toward energy security and economic renewal, Dr. Yumkella’s address serves as a vital reminder that true leadership is defined not by party lines but by vision, humility, and a united purpose.
